Hemp palms are hardy, even if they don't necessarily survive the sub-zero temperatures that often prevail in this country. If you want to overwinter a hemp palm in a tub outside, you should protect it from frost and even more from moisture.

Hemp palms can be overwintered in tubs, but should be protected

Sheltered location on terrace or balcony

In addition to the cold, the hemp palm in the bucket is particularly affected by the winter wetness caused by meltwater or rain.

Therefore place the bucket in a place where it is protected and does not get too much moisture.

Cover the hemp palm with protective materials:

  • garden fleece
  • coconut mats
  • fir branches
  • brushwood
  • burlap

Above all, protect the heart of the palm. If only the leaves freeze, the hemp palm recovers quite quickly. Frost damage to the heart of the palm, on the other hand, causes the hemp palm to die.

tips

If you want to overwinter a hemp palm indoors, place the plant in as bright a location as possible. Water regularly when the soil surface has dried out. Fertilize very little or not at all during the winter period.
