Flower bulbs are particularly effective when many flowers are close together. Mixing different varieties should also ensure a spring-like, colorful dream. With the so-called lasagna method, it actually comes true.

Flower bulbs are best combined with different planting depths

This is how the lasagna method works

Various ingredients are used for the Italian classic. They are piled up layer by layer. The same is done with the flower bulbs. Several onion rates of different sizes are planted in layers. In this way, the available space is used to the maximum, for maximum flowering enjoyment.

Ingredients for Blossom Lasagna

For a flower lasagna you need different ingredients and utensils. The amounts depend on the size of the pot to be planted or whether you are planting several pots with flower bulbs. You should get this in time:

  • a large, deep pot with drainage holes
  • Substrate mixture of 2/3 potting soil and 1/3 sand
  • Gravel or expanded clay (19.73€) for the drainage layer
  • plant fleece
  • several different types of flower bulbs
  • possibly more fleece, styrofoam plate (35.50 €) and brushwood as winter protection

The ideal onion mix

All spring flowers are suitable for the lasagne method. However, varieties with different planting depths must be combined with each other. Since the planting depth is about twice the size of the bulb, this means that at least one variety with large, medium and small bulbs is required. However, you have complete freedom of choice when it comes to putting together the colours.

Finally, when all the bulbs are covered with soil, you can add a few other low-growing plants, such as horned violets, to the pot. Its flowers fill in the last gaps in the carpet of flowers.

The flower bulbs are planted in autumn. Proceed as follows:

  1. Fill in a drainage layer several centimeters high.
  2. Cover the drainage layer with fleece to prevent mixing with the substrate.
  3. Put in a layer of the substrate.
  4. Layer the onions according to size. First the large, then the medium-sized and finally the smallest onions. Put some soil between two layers of onions.
  5. Water the flower bulbs well.
  6. The flower bulbs will overwinter in the pot. Put it in a cool, frost-free cellar at a maximum of 8 degrees Celsius, where it must remain until spring. Alternatively, it can remain well protected outside or even temporarily buried in the garden.

Cover large drain holes with a large shard of pottery to keep the substrate from washing out.
