Flower bulbs in balcony boxes deliver the first flowers of the year. In order for them to sprout quickly in spring, they must be planted in autumn. But the cold winter is inevitably waiting for them. So they survive frosts unscathed.

Ideally, flower bulbs are planted in autumn, although they will not flower until spring. This gives them enough time to take root. It can freeze outside just a few days after planting.

Waiting bulbs are not at home outdoors, even if they are hardy bulb varieties. The boxes are usually placed in such a way that they are fully exposed to icy winds. The cold is closing in on them from all sides. The smaller the flower box (€16.99), the quicker the contents can freeze completely.

Temporary relocation

Balcony boxes planted with flower bulbs (€109.00) are better off overwintering in a cool room where it is ensured that no frost gets there. The ideal temperature is between 0 and 8 degrees Celsius. However, the balcony boxes must be removable, i.e. mobile.

Winter quarters not only protect against frost, but also against the winter sun. This can tempt the onions to sprout too early. The dangers of wet or dry conditions can also be better regulated there by watering the onions from time to time as needed.

A suitable winter quarters is not available to every balcony owner. If the desire for onion flowers is great, you can dare to spend the winter on the balcony. With a few protective measures, the cold can be reduced to a tolerable level. However, there is no guarantee that the bulbs will survive the winter.

These measures help the flower bulbs in the balcony box:

  • Detach the balcony box and place it on the floor
  • preferably against the rain on the wall
  • Wrap the box with several layers of fleece
  • place on styrofoam or wooden boards
  • protect from winter sun with brushwood cover
  • or put flower bulbs in the shade

If you also have a garden, you can bury the flower box in it after planting the bulbs and dig them out again in the spring.
