Field horsetail or horsetail belongs botanically to the ferns. This group of plants does not form flowers and therefore no seeds. It reproduces via spores that develop in spore ears. When do horsetail spores grow?

The flower of the field horsetail is reminiscent of an elongated mushroom

The "blossoming" of field horsetail

Horsetail forms sprouts in spring, on which the brownish spores grow. After the "flowering" period, the sprouts recede, making way for the green shoots that are sterile.

Field horsetail can be distinguished from swamp horsetail by the brown color of the spore capsule.

The spores spread from March to May.

Cutting sprout sprouts in the garden

If you have planted field horsetail in a bucket, you should cut off the sprouts with the spore capsules immediately. This way you can at least limit the spread in the garden a little.

tips

Field horsetail is one of the indicator plants. Where horsetail grows, the soil is compacted and the water table is very high.
