Flower bulbs usually do not sprout until spring. When the days and nights are slowly getting warmer and the time to bloom is approaching. Mild temperatures outdoors or storage in rooms that are too warm can elicit the first greens from some onions - before their time has come.

Flower bulbs that have already sprouted can be planted in spring without any problems

Flower bulbs in autumn

Caution should be exercised when flower bulbs are offered for sale in the hardware store, garden centre, supermarket or wherever else in autumn that are already budding. Better keep your hands off these specimens, even if they are a bargain in price.

Although these bulbs are mostly hardy spring bloomers, their foliage is sensitive to frost. Planted outdoors, the parts of the plant above ground can freeze to death in sub-zero temperatures. A protective cover is conceivable, but even that doesn't help in severe frosts.

You can also plant flower bulbs that have sprouted out that you already have in pots and overwinter in a cool, frost-free room. Only when the severe frosts subside can you bring them back outside. At first maybe only during the day.

Flower bulbs in spring

Alternatively, spring flowering bulbs can also be planted in spring. They have already received the cold stimulus that these plants need for flowering in a cold store. They are ready for planting.

Most of the flower bulbs offered do not yet show a trace of green, but sprouted specimens can also be bought and planted immediately in the garden or in pots. If the current weather is still too frosty, they still have to be protected by a cover.

Set up in the house

In spring or even late winter, flower bulbs that have been driven out can also be made to bloom in your own living space. Put a flower bulb in a glass with water, which looks particularly decorative.

You can also cover large flower bulbs with a layer of wax. Or simply plant them in potting soil in the classic way.

tips

Flower bulbs that have blown out could also indicate incorrect storage in the retail store. Look closely at the flower bulbs to see their quality.

Expelled summer bloomers

Summer bloomers are often sold in stores. Then it is clear that the first green can already be seen. Outside, however, they may only be planted out from mid-May.

  • only buy sprouted onions if it is February or later
  • first plant in the pot
  • cultivate indoors until mid-May
