Blue rue is a flowering steppe dweller from Asia. It is also known as Russian Lavender because of its appearance. It grows upright and is therefore impressive in a single position. But blue rue can also be wonderfully combined with other plants.

Combined with yellow flowers, the blue rhombus looks lively and fresh

Combine according to requirements

In the garden, the blue rue loves sunny locations. Drought and poor soil with hardly any nutrients do not bother her. All plants that can also cope with these conditions can be combined with the blue diamond.

Steppe beds, gravel and rock gardens as well as naturally designed gardens benefit from the blue diamond. This plant can reach up to 1.5 m in height and occasionally more. It grows upright, slightly overhanging. The inflorescences of blue rue are numerous and grow up to 50 cm long.

In order not to detract from the appearance of the blue rhombus, its neighbors should grow either taller or shorter. The panicle-like inflorescences should be clearly visible during the flowering period from August to September.

Mediterranean combinations

Although the blue rue comes from the Asian steppe, it can easily pass as a Mediterranean plant. It therefore goes well with other plants from the Mediterranean region. For example lavender and sage. It is just as easy to care for, perennial and hardy as these two plants. Together they therefore form a combination for several years.

tips

Planted in a large pot, the blue rue, together with Mediterranean flowers and green shrubs, also brings the Mediterranean flair to the terrace or balcony. With a little winter protection, it can survive harsh winters there.

Substitute for lavender

The blue diamond resembles lavender and has similar requirements. Because of this, it can be treated like its herbal double. It can be combined with plants that otherwise rely on lavender as a companion. These are especially the roses.

Rose varieties that bloom in bright white, yellow or red form a particularly beautiful contrast with the blue-violet rhombus. However, they should grow taller than 1.5 m so that the beautiful rose blossoms are not covered by the blue diamond.

Notice:
The labial flowers of the blue rue provide food for the beneficial bees. For this reason alone it is a valuable plant for every garden.

More good neighbors

Different varieties of blue rue can also be planted together. But that can seem a bit boring. The interaction with the following plants creates more excitement:

  • catnip
  • yucca
  • splendor candle
  • spurge
  • ornamental grasses
  • cistus
