If you see wasps constantly flying back and forth on the balcony or terrace, there may be a wasp nest in a flower pot. As long as the animals do not disturb, they can remain in their place. If the wasps become intrusive, appropriate countermeasures must be taken.
Wasps should not be controlled chemically
The wasp state in the flower pot
If you observe wasps in one of your flower pots, a wasp queen has chosen exactly this pot as a summer home. She lays her eggs here and raises the young. Usually these are harmless wasp species that are not disturbing. If the flower pot is not right next to the coffee table or the children's playground, the wasp's nest should remain untouched. Wasps are actually useful garden dwellers because they feed on flies and caterpillars that can damage young plants. By autumn at the latest, the wasps will die and disappear from the flowerpot.
However, if the animals are the German wasp or the common wasp, they will become more and more obtrusive throughout the summer. They love sweet juices, cakes, but also grilled meat and sausages.
Even if the wasps only use their nest in the flower pot for one summer and then don't colonize it again, the yellow-black flying insects can be terribly annoying and sting at the same time. Appropriate countermeasures must be taken here.
Ways to repel wasps
If wasps become a real nuisance due to their massive occurrence, professional help is required. Trained specialists or, in an emergency, the fire brigade know how to remove or relocate wasp nests.
If the wasp infestation is limited, home remedies are usually completely sufficient to combat it. While chemical sprays kill the wasps, they are also deadly to insects that you like to have in your garden.
As an immediate measure, another place for the flower pot, as far away as possible from your seat, helps. If this is not possible, there are other alternatives to drive away wasps.
Fight wasps with herbs
To prevent wasps from landing on your skin, you can rub yourself with sprays or oils, such as clove oil. Other strongly scented herbs keep the animals away:
- lavender
- thyme
- lemon slices
- peppermint
- basil
- Tomato plants on the terrace between the flower pots
If ground coffee is burned in a small bowl on the table, the wasps hold back. On the other hand, they are attracted by aromatic perfume and brightly colored clothing.
