Anyone who enjoys unusual decorations should try to create a mini garden in a flower pot. Pretty miniature gardens with small houses, garden furniture etc. are always a special eye-catcher on the terrace, the balcony or for the living room.

A simple planter can be transformed into a beautiful mini garden with a little creativity

The right container for a mini garden

There are a variety of options here, for example

  • small or large flower pots
  • plant bowls
  • decorative baskets
  • old wooden boxes
  • Zinc container (disused bucket or a tub)

Planning a mini garden

First of all, you should think about what kind of mini garden you want to create. Should it be a fairy garden with an imaginatively designed pond, possibly a tree house and exotic plants? Or would you rather create a small oasis of calm with small beds, a bench and a garden shed?
Your imagination is the limit. The only important thing is that you make a plan to get the materials you need to make it happen.

Which plants and which decoration are suitable for a mini garden?

In any case, you should choose small, slow-growing plants so that the area does not become overgrown. Succulents and cacti, among others, are suitable. But there are also extra small potted plants in garden stores that are suitable for a mini garden, for example small violets, mini rose bushes or very small orchids, which can be integrated extremely well in a fairy garden.
Depending on what you want your garden to look like, buy a small house, matching garden furniture and figures from the toy store. You could use a flat pebble as a terrace, a gravel path is made of coarse sand.
Even a pond can be built. Just dig in a small plastic coaster, line the edges and fill with water.

How do I start gardening?

In principle, you proceed in exactly the same way as when planting a normal flower pot. Make sure that no waterlogging can occur in the chosen planter. Drainage holes are important, to be safe, start with a drainage layer.
To do this, put a not too thin layer of coarse gravel, broken pottery or expanded clay (19.73€) in the container and cover this area with a layer of fleece. Now fill the potting soil just below the edge of the container. If you want a hilly landscape, you can now shape your hills or mountains.
Then plant your plants. You can then continue with the individual garden design.
