Terracotta flower pots beautify every terrace and give the garden a southern atmosphere. However, these beautiful pots are prone to cracking. But broken flower pots can be repaired.

The glue for the repair has to be chosen differently depending on the material of the pot

Why do terracotta pots break so easily?

Terracotta is a porous material that retains moisture in its pores. On the one hand this is good for the plants, since there is still water even on dry days, on the other hand it is a disadvantage in winter. The water in the pot walls freezes and bursts the material, cracks appear or shards break out.
A clay or terracotta pot is also quickly destroyed by carelessness. Even a strong gust of wind can knock over and destroy the pot. However, a broken flower pot can be easily repaired.

Repair cracks in the flower pot

For the repair you need a waterproof glue that not only sticks, but also fills small gaps.
Besides that

  • a brush
  • Two component adhesive
  • some tape
  • a sharp knife
  • fine sandpaper
  • possibly spray paint

The repair

How to proceed with the repair step by step:

  1. Use the brush to remove dust from the cracked area.
  2. First try inserting the fragment without glue.
  3. Apply the glue to the shard and the pot.
  4. Insert the shard into the pot, press down briefly and secure tightly with adhesive tape.
  5. Let the glue harden.
  6. If there are several fragments, glue them together first.
  7. The glued shard can then be inserted into the pot in one piece.
  8. Fix the repaired area with adhesive tape until the glue has fully cured.
  9. Remove the adhesive strips.
  10. If glue has escaped from the cracks, it is cut off with a sharp knife.
  11. Sand the edges with fine sandpaper.
  12. The repaired area can be waterproofed from the inside and outside with a clear coat.

If the repaired area on the pot is particularly conspicuous, it can be concealed with an acrylic painting or by gluing on small decorative items.

What to do if a repair is not possible?

If flower pots break, it is usually the favorite items. A repair is often no longer possible because the shard has broken into many individual pieces. With a little creativity, a broken flower pot does not have to be thrown away.
Depending on what the break looks like, you can plant tillandsias (a bromeliad), cacti or even small succulents so that they grow out of the break.
