Concrete is a versatile material that can even be used to make flower pots. In fact, concrete pots are very trendy because they are almost indestructible. Frost can't harm them and with a little imagination they can be spiced up into great unique pieces.

Concrete flower pots are timelessly beautiful and easy to make yourself

Concrete work checklist

Before you can start working on the flowerpot, all the necessary utensils must first be prepared:

  • a bag of ready-mixed concrete that only needs to be mixed with water
  • bucket for stirring
  • watering can with water
  • trowel for stirring
  • two shapes of different sizes that fit into each other
  • Possibly acrylic paint to color the concrete (must be cement-safe!)
  • working gloves
  • sandpaper & grinder

water the flower pot

Once all the preparations have been made, the actual work can begin.

  1. Oil the molds you use so that the cinder block comes off better afterwards.
  2. Mix the concrete mix according to package directions.
  3. Pour about a quarter of the batter into the large pan.
  4. Spread the concrete well.
  5. Place the second form in the first and press it slightly into the soft concrete.
  6. Fill in the inner mold with sand. This way, the soft concrete cannot dent the shape.
  7. Pour the remaining concrete around the second form.
  8. After the curing time, you can carefully remove the molds.

finish pot

It is possible that the raw shape of the flowerpot is not completely flat. Help with sandpaper or a grinder.
If the surface is satisfactory, the flower pot can be embellished with acrylic painting.
It is also possible to make colorful concrete pots right away. To do this, cement-safe colors are added to the mixed concrete.

Advantages of a concrete flower pot

First of all, concrete flower pots are extremely cheap if you make them yourself. All that is required is a little manual skill and a little time.
Another advantage is the absolute frost resistance of the concrete pot. So that the pot no longer absorbs water, plastics can be mixed in in liquid form when mixing the concrete. Get advice on this from the hardware store.
The disadvantage, however, is the high weight of the concrete pots. Small specimens can still be transported easily, but large planters are no longer so easy to move without a sack truck. However, the concrete pots are also very stable due to their weight.
