Why the garden pond?
Adult mosquitoes can be found in garden ponds as well as in grass. However, the insects prefer to be near water because they find ideal breeding opportunities here. If the water temperature is around 15°C, the larvae develop under the best conditions. This creates a cycle that can become a real plague in the long run.
drive away mosquitoes
Fortunately, there are numerous ways to drive away the insects without using any chemicals:
- Manual removal
- fishes
- plantings
- fly screen
- fountain
Manual removal
Although it is a bit tedious to fish the larvae out of the water, it is certainly the cheapest way to stem the spread of small populations. In the early stages, the larvae swim to the surface of the water, where you can attack them with a simple net. They recognize the insect larvae
- Little black bodies
- Twitching movements
- Inverted larvae
- Attempts to escape from water movement
fishes
Fish feed on mosquito larvae, so they are very effective. You can fall back on the following ways:
- goldfish
- gold orf
- rudd
- roach
- moldies
- minnows
plantings
On the one hand, the water hose supports you in combating it. They fish the larvae out of the water with their long shoots. They also trap their prey in air bubbles. It does not settle at any specific point, but wanders around in the pond basin.
It is also advisable to buy plants that attract dragonflies. Because these insects also feed on mosquitoes. Suitable are for example
- chickweed
- or the eared thousand-leaf
fly screen
A fly screen is only suitable if there are no fish in your pond. They stretch the fine-meshed net over the water surface and thus deny the mosquitoes access to their breeding grounds. Look for UV-safe material. Another advantage is that you don't have to fish leaves out of the garden pond in autumn.
fountain
Mosquitoes only feel comfortable on smooth water surfaces. A small fountain is therefore very good in your pond - both practical and optical.
