A bed edging made of wood is relatively easy to build yourself, but you need time for it. After all, the frame should be stable. Nevertheless, a wooden bed edging is not as durable as a stone one, because wood does weather.

Which wood is suitable for a bed edging?
If you want to enjoy your wooden bed edging for many years, then you should use durable wood for it. For example, Douglas fir, oak, larch and robinia are relatively weather-resistant, but they are not as cheap as soft wood. Soft and less weather-resistant wood should definitely be treated before planting in moist soil so that it does not rot too quickly.
Suitable woods for weather-resistant bed borders:
- Oak
- Black Locust
- douglas fir
- larch
How do I design a wooden bed border
A wooden border is not the same as a picket fence. You have numerous design options for a bed edging. Low palisades are quite popular. They can be created at a uniform height but also intentionally irregular. Weather-resistant wood is simply hammered into the ground with a mallet to the desired height.
The braided bed edging
If you are reasonably skilled with your hands, you can also weave your bed edging yourself. The young shoots of willow and hazel bushes are suitable for this. However, do not leave the cut shoots for too long, otherwise they will dry out and become hard. Then braiding will quickly become a real feat for you.
If the wood you need is growing in your garden, then this edging is also very inexpensive. Both hazel bushes and willows can be pruned quite generously without the bush suffering permanent damage. So you can renew your border at any time.
The fast tour
If you want to create a wooden bed border with very little effort, then buy prefabricated palisade elements in the hardware store. These are round or semicircular timbers that are attached to one another with strips or wire. Elements with wire can be bent into different shapes or existing curves can be adjusted and easily hammered into the (loose) earth with a wooden hammer.
tips
If your garden is extremely damp, then wooden bed edgings may not be suitable or they may need to be replaced regularly.
