The damp and cold season often brings it to light: the garden shed roof is getting old and has become leaky. Water can penetrate under the roof skin, the wood could rot and, in the worst case, mold will form inside, which you can recognize by the musty smell. But that's no cause for concern, because if you react quickly, the damage can usually be easily repaired.

The roof should be inspected regularly for damage - especially after a storm

Identify the extent of the defect

As soon as you notice that moisture is penetrating the garden shed (€24.90), you should look for the damaged area. There doesn't always have to be large puddles on the ground. Even if individual drops pearl down the wall, you should immediately check the roof for leaks:

  • Clear the house completely on a dry day.
  • Take a strong flashlight or torch and check inside where the water is coming from.

If only a little moisture penetrates, you can almost always repair the damage quite easily. However, if several bitumen shingles or entire strips of roofing felt have come loose, you should first temporarily seal the roof. The roof covering then has to be replaced in the spring.

Repair minor damage

If the damaged area is not very large, you can almost always close it with roofing paint or cold glue. To do this, the roof must be dry and clean. You should therefore only do this work in good weather.

  • Paint the roof paint on the damaged areas.
  • To do this, only use tools that you no longer need, because the paint adheres permanently to the equipment.
  • Alternatively, you can repair the damaged area with roofing felt and cold glue.

If there is no frost, you can check the tightness by pouring plenty of water over the roof.

tips

If you have to re-lay the roofing felt or cover the roof with fresh bitumen shingles, you should postpone this work until spring. During the winter months, temporarily seal the garden house roof with pond liner, which you fold up slightly on the sides and fasten with waterproof adhesive tape or a stapler.
