In tree nurseries and garden shops, rhododendrons are propagated by cuttings or grafting. Hobby gardeners help themselves with a proven method: the rhododendron offshoot propagation.

Make 2 out of 1 - simple and effective
Buying rhododendron plants is not a must. More and more hobby gardeners are trying to create a new plant from rhododendron offshoots. You only need a bit of skill
- a small sharp knife
- humus soil
- water
Propagate rhododendrons by cuttings
The variety of varieties that the specialist trade has to offer today is multifaceted and unique at the same time. From the classic varieties of large-flowered hybrids to the popular Roseum Elegans, each species is a real eye-catcher in your home garden.
Just a small cut to conjure up great things
You are looking for a robust, large branch that is close to the ground. There you dig out the earth about four to five centimeters deep and enrich it with humus. About 10 cm below the last leaf you cut the branch about two centimeters long. It shouldn't kink and should keep its shape as much as possible. Press the notch apart with a match or pebble.
And so it goes on…
Put the prepared branch on the bottom of the dug hole and cover it with hummus. Then sprinkle with water. When raking the soil later, make sure that the branch is not damaged and growth is not interrupted.
Green fingers and a little patience
Check the freshly grown offshoot for root growth in spring. With a bit of luck, roots will already have formed. Now the new rhododendron offshoot can be carefully separated from the mother plant with garden shears. The sprout now grows by itself and can be transplanted.
As soon as the little garden offspring is in its place, you should let it rest. Then, over time, he will take root best. And when it is fully grown one day, you can grow a new rhododendron offshoot from it.
tips and tricks
The new rhododendron does not like calcareous soil either. You should definitely take this into account when choosing the location. It is also advisable to supply the soil with a nutrient-rich fertilizer at least two to three times a year. This ensures healthy growth and guarantees lush flowers.
