Snowflakes and ice crystals turn every rhododendron into a wintry work of art in the bare garden. That's why it's worth the work of winterizing a rhododendron so that it springs back to blooming life.

Through intensive breeding, more and more new varieties are being created, some of which have multiple flower colors. But beautiful foliage, compact growth and, above all, good winter hardiness are also important breeding goals, such as with the varieties
- Rhododendron luteum
- Yakushimanum hybrids
- Rhododendron Catawbiense hybrid
It is usually not a problem to overwinter them in the garden. Exceptions are some species that are not so hardy and varieties cultivated in tubs. What can help with hibernation? Of course, as a hobby gardener, this is of particular interest to you.
Winter care and winter protection
Rhododendrons root very shallow in the ground. Frost first moves deeper into the earth from the soil surface. Therefore, the shallow roots are the first to be threatened by frost damage. This endangers the entire plant. Protect your rhododendron despite mild winters and global warming!
Overwinter rhododendrons in the bed
Partial shade and moderately acidic soil with a pH of 4.0 to 5.0 is the best location. You have already done half the work to ensure that your rhododendron gets through the winter healthy.
Due to less rain and snowfall, your rhododendron lacks natural protection against the cold in winter. Moderate irrigation with low-calcium water is therefore important before the onset of frost. At sub-zero temperatures and direct sunlight at the same time, there is a risk of drought damage. Watering doesn't help, only shading with reed mats. Then your rhododendron will survive the coldest season and delight you with lush green leaves.
Overwinter rhododendrons in tubs
Rhododendrons need more care in a tub or pot. A wind-protected location without direct sunlight brings it into spring. The planters should stand on a thick styrofoam plate (35.50€). Moderate watering prevents drought.
You can avoid these maintenance mistakes
- Many rhododendrons that do not survive the winter did not freeze, but died of thirst.
- Avoid waterlogging when watering and make sure that excess water drains off.
- Curled leaves can also be a sign of frost. When it gets warmer, roll them up again.
tips and tricks
Overwintering rhododendrons planted in the bed is not a problem as long as the soil and location are right. When kept in tubs, winter protection and a wind-protected location are required. Most importantly, don't forget to water. But you can't drown them either!
