Oiling a hedge trimmer is essential for the smooth functioning of the same. The oil also protects the hedge trimmer from dirt and moisture, protecting it from rust and premature deterioration. Find out below how to oil the blades and gears of your hedge trimmer.

What should be oiled on the hedge trimmer?
The most sensitive part of a hedge trimmer (77.00 €) are the cutting blades. They are the ones most in contact with the environment and so can get dirty and become slower and dull. The cutting blades should therefore be oiled after each use. The oil covers the metal like a film, loosens dirt and protects the hedge trimmer from dust and moisture.
Another part of the hedge trimmer that needs attention from time to time is the gearbox.
However, this rarely needs to be lubricated; according to public information, every 100 hours of operation is sufficient.
Oil the hedge trimmer regularly
The hedge trimmer should be oiled briefly after each use. You can use commercially available special sprays that contain resin solvent and lubricating grease in one, or you can clean the hedge trimmer yourself with a resin solvent such as acetone and then rub it with oil. Regardless of whether you apply the agent by spraying or rubbing, after application you should switch on the hedge trimmer briefly so that the oil can be distributed thoroughly. While this method is good for quick cleaning and oiling, it's not very thorough. From time to time you should therefore disassemble your hedge trimmer and oil all parts individually.
Thoroughly oil the hedge trimmer
- resin-dissolving agent
- oil
- Gloves (!)
- screwdriver
- metal brush
- dry cloth
1. Cut off power supply
Disconnect the hedge trimmer from the mains or remove the battery or spark plug.
2. Disassemble
Disassemble the hedge trimmer into its individual parts.
3. Rough cleaning
Brush the knife blades individually to remove coarse dirt.
4. Fine cleaning
Then clean the two leaves with a resin solvent and a dry cloth.
5. Oiling
Then rub both generously with oil. Also clean and oil the shaft and the screw connections.
Oil the hedge trimmer gearbox
Depending on the model, the structure of the hedge trimmer and access to the gearbox can vary. Hedge trimmers that allow consumer service have a locking screw on the underside of the housing. This is unscrewed and the tube of grease is screwed tight with gear grease. Up to 5 grams of grease should be pressed into the gears, that's not much more than a hard push. Don't put too much grease in the gears!
