Although bell peppers originally come from the warm climates of Central and South America, you can also harvest their fruits in your own garden. Either you buy young plants or you can grow peppers from seeds yourself.

The seed may be dried or removed from fresh, ripe peppers and dried. Best seed quality can be recognized by the following criteria:

  • the seed was kept cool, dry and dark
  • the seeds are firm and cannot be dented
  • the seeds are two to four millimeters in size and ocher in color

How long is the germination period?

The germination time of pepper seeds varies depending on the quality of the seeds, temperature and sowing depth. At best, the seeds germinate after five days, but the patient gardener often has to wait up to two weeks before the first pepper seedlings can be seen.

Activate the germination of the pepper seeds

To improve the germination time and germination of dry seeds, soak them in lukewarm chamomile tea or garlic water for 1 to 2 days. This destroys any germs and fungi that may be present on the seeds.
