The right cucumber for every taste

Generally high-yielding varieties are the F1 hybrids with a long harvest period. Some are also free of bitter substances and resistant to mildew. For example, you can choose between the following varieties of cucumbers and pickles:

  • Rimoni F1 - Cucumber - bitter free, edible peel.
  • Delicacy - mini cucumber for salad or for pickling.
  • Monastery cucumber (Monastyrski) - cucumber, robust, can be stored for a long time.
  • Sikkim cucumber - cucumber, Indian variety, very aromatic.

In order to get resistant, more robust plants, you can graft cucumbers yourself or buy grafted cucumber plants.

Cultivation of cucumbers in greenhouses and outdoors

In mid-May, cucumber plants can be planted outside at a distance of 60 centimetres. Anyone who fulfills their desire for warmth, sun and wind protection at the location and takes good care of them will be rewarded with a bountiful harvest. A climbing aid is the best solution for making the growth of cucumbers in the greenhouse and outdoors sensible! For greenhouse plants, pinch out the side shoots.

Cucumber cultivation on the balcony

You can grow cucumbers on the balcony in a bucket or pot that is at least 20 liters in size. Fill the planter with substrate or potting soil, plant cucumbers, attach to a trellis and place in a wind-protected, sunny location.

Finally harvest time

Only the flowering then, under favorable conditions, already two weeks later time for the first cucumber harvest. The full aroma is in the fruit early in the morning and is therefore the best time to harvest. Overripe cucumbers turn yellow and should be harvested immediately to avoid unnecessarily weakening the plant.

Good and not so good friends

The worst enemies of cucumbers are slugs and the cucumber powdery mildew fungus. Affected plant parts must be disposed of immediately.

Whether in the greenhouse or in the open air - good friends are beans, garlic, kohlrabi, spinach and dill. Not so good: Peas, cabbage, beetroot and celery.

Cucumbers preserved as pickled or salted cucumbers can be kept all year round. Fresh cucumbers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. The Sikkim cucumber has the longest shelf life. Do not store near fruit containing ethylene, such as apples.
