Chilies are not only useful, but also decorative plants for tubs, window boxes and pots. So that they feel comfortable in the container, the focus is on drainage when repotting. Other factors are also of interest.

Repot in good time as a successful continuation of cultivation
If the cultivation was crowned with success, the chillies ideally continue their lush growth in their own planter. At the latest when their leaves are constantly touching, the time is ripe for the move. Otherwise, they are at risk of trouble, such as rot or fungal infections.
These materials are required:
- Compost based potting soil
- Planter with drainage holes in the bottom
- Perlite, (37.51€) gravel, grit (46.95€) or crushed potsherds
- a piece of garden or weed fleece
- a coaster
- protective work gloves
Depending on the variety of chilli cultivated, the container should provide sufficient space for the root system. In terms of material, black plastic is just as suitable as breathable clay.
Step by step into the new home
Once all the utensils are ready, the work can begin. In the first step, spread the crushed, inorganic material on the bottom of the planter. Spread the water- and air-permeable fleece over it so that the drainage does not later become clogged with substrate.
Fill in a first layer of potting soil over the fleece. Place the potted or pricked chilli plant in the middle of the container. Favor the culture in the flower box (€16.99) position the chillies at a distance of 30 cm to 40 cm from each other.
Press down lightly with your fist as you insert the rest of the substrate. This means that there are no cavities that would impede root growth. Last but not least, a well-measured dose of irrigation water ensures that the chili grows quickly.
Pouring rim prevents contamination
Prudent hobby gardeners always leave a watering edge of 5 cm free. It's really annoying to wipe up the spilled soil-water mixture from the ground after each watering.
If excess irrigation water collects in the saucer, it should be removed after 30 minutes at the latest. Otherwise, due to capillary action, it will rise back up into the root ball and cause waterlogging.
tips and tricks
With a plant trolley, even heavy tubs are mobile on the balcony and terrace. They are readily available for purchase in stores. Alternatively, you can assemble the practical helper yourself using 40 mm thick wooden panels and castors from the hardware store.
