The unpredictability of the weather is a problem for many a chili culture. Harvest earlier and longer in the sheltered environment of a greenhouse. This is how you can outsmart the bad weather gods.

A chili greenhouse should at least offer that

There are greenhouses (77.12€) for the hobby garden for every budget. The thoughtless grabbing of the seemingly cheapest offer may end in frustration. After all, chillies are tropical plants with an average growth height of 1 meter.

These requirements should be met:

  • Length 2.50m x width 2.50m
  • Side height 1.50 m to 2.00 m
  • 1 door and 2 windows for ventilation
  • Glazing with 10-16 mm triple wall panes
  • 1 stable aluminum foundation

The use of clear glass is not recommended because it simply breaks too quickly.

The central site conditions

In addition to the external framework, climate and soil conditions determine the success of chili cultivation in the greenhouse:

  • sunny to semi-shady position, warm and sheltered from the wind
  • nutrient rich soil humic and well drained
  • Humidity of 70 percent and higher
  • Temperatures between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius

Shading in summer and a heating source in winter should be available for heat regulation.

This is how easy it is to grow chili in the greenhouse

Sowing in the greenhouse started in February at temperatures of 22 degrees Celsius. When the seedlings have developed 3 to 4 pairs of leaves, they are pricked out. In this phase you keep the chillies constantly moist and do not administer any fertilizer.

From a growth height of 40 cm, regular pinching promotes vitality and a compact habit. Watering is preferably done with collected rainwater. Organic fertilizers such as compost and horn shavings (€32.93) serve as food for the heavy feeders.

If it gets too hot in the greenhouse in summer, open windows and shade provide a remedy. Busy insects get in through the openings and pollinate the flowers. Given these dream conditions, the harvest season starts at the end of July.

tips and tricks

The desire for a greenhouse in which the gardener can stand upright increases the purchase price disproportionately. Clever chili growers quickly build a mini greenhouse over a self-dug trench lined with gravel and stand in it.
