Sowing peas begins in March with cold-resistant varieties. Learn all about the right technique to successfully sow climbing peas. From preparation and accurate laying to protection against uninvited guests.

Meticulous preparation creates optimal framework conditions

Place pea seeds directly in the bed soil. Before you get there, there are some simple preparations to be made. Select a bed from the previous year in which no other legumes were previously grown. Here you work in good garden compost.

Prefer a location with the following requirements:

  • sunny to partially shaded location
  • humic, nutrient-rich soil, calcareous and fresh
  • a pH value of 6.0 to 8.0 is ideal

On the day of sowing, loosen the soil thoroughly, remove weeds and stones. Compost is no longer incorporated. Instead, a dose of rock flour (€14.13) effectively prevents fungal diseases; either raked flat or sprinkled into the seed furrows later.

Climbing aid for high-growing varieties

The vast majority of pea varieties require a climbing aid. Wire mesh (14.99€) stretched between two pegs in the middle of the bed has proved its worth. Tufts of brushwood planted in a row in the ground convey a natural appearance.

This is how the spacing and sowing depth are correct

Peas are a popular vegetable, not only for children and adults. Animal garden dwellers are also after it. In addition to an adequate planting distance, the appropriate sowing depth plays a central role. This is how you put the pea seeds correctly in the bed:

  • use the handle of the rake to make grooves 5-6 cm deep
  • the row spacing is 40 cm
  • the planting distance of the seeds is 3-4 cm
  • Press the soil down a little and water well

The peas should not be more than 20 cm away from the climbing aids. We recommend covering the seed, including the climbing aids, with protective nets until the plants have grown 10 cm high.

tips and tricks

You increase the germination capacity of pea seeds by allowing the seeds to soak in lukewarm camomile tea for about 2 hours before sowing. You can safely discard those seeds that float on the surface. Even the most careful planting will not encourage them to germinate.
