Chard is a biennial plant. Leaves and stems can be harvested in the first year until late autumn. In the second year, between March and May, the chard delivers fresh green leaves for a second time. The prerequisite for this is the correct overwintering of the hardy plant outdoors.

Warm winter quarters for chard unnecessary

Swiss chard is hardy and usually withstands double-digit minus temperatures. Thus, moving to a warm winter quarters is not necessary. Wrapped up warm, even the bucket chard can stay outside. The chard plants in the bed get a warm blanket.

You need this:

  • Mulch, (239.00€) brushwood or horn shavings
  • Jute, fleece, old sacks

Properly covered, the chard will quickly sprout again in spring

If the chard has been harvested by late autumn, any leaves that may still be standing are cut off a hand's breadth above the ground. The plants get a covering of brushwood, mulch or horn shavings. (32.93€) They serve as protection against prolonged frost and moisture.

From the end of February/beginning of March, the chard will be covered again depending on the frost. In the meantime, mulch and horn shavings (€32.93) have supplied the soil with nutrients. Now it quickly sprout again and you can harvest it as an early garden vegetable from the end of March to the beginning of May.

When the chard begins to bloom, it becomes inedible. Now you can use it for seed production or undermine it.

Protection for tub chard

The roots of the chard must also be protected from prolonged frost in the bucket. Just like outdoors, the plant is cut down and covered with brushwood. In addition, you wrap the bucket with jute, fleece or a sack.

Who winters better - leaf chard or stem chard?

Leaf chard is less sensitive to frost than stem chard. With a sheltered location and careful coverage, the Swiss chard also has a good chance of hibernating. Overwintering is worth trying, especially in relatively frost-free locations. Especially since brushwood and mulch hardly cause any costs.
