Proper care of rhubarb is all about a few factors. The following lines sum up what these are and how they are implemented.

How to water rhubarb?

Mature rhubarb plants develop a huge mass of leaves. Above that, they evaporate large amounts of water in the sunny location. The need for irrigation water is at a correspondingly high level.

  • if the soil has dried, water the rhubarb generously
  • give the water directly to the roots
  • water preferably in the morning or evening hours

Which fertilizer is recommended?

As a heavy feeder, rhubarb requires a constant supply of nutrients. Work a good dose of garden compost into the soil regularly from February to June. A layer of mulch made of grass, leaves or pine needles retains moisture in the soil and releases valuable nutrients.

After the harvest, the focus of fertilization shifts to the application of nitrogen. Add horn shavings (€32.93) or horn meal to the compost. Spraying with nettle manure or liquid guano (€121.99) is also recommended.

When should rhubarb be implemented?

Healthy rhubarb stays at the site for seven years. After this long cultivation period, move the plant to allow the soil to recover. Experienced home gardeners now divide the rootstock to rejuvenate and propagate rhubarb.

  • Dig up the rhubarb in autumn
  • Divide into two or more segments with a spade
  • let the interface dry

Does rhubarb need to be cut for winter?

From June, rhubarb can grow as it pleases. In this way, he creates power reserves for the coming season. Before winter sets in, the plant pulls in its remaining stems and leaves on its own. Cutting is not necessary.

Winter protection is only recommended in rough locations and in the first year:

  • twist the stems out of the plant
  • cover the plant with compost, straw, leaves or brushwood
  • Wrap in bubble wrap and place on wood

Are there certain diseases?

Rhubarb mosaic disease is considered the most important disease. The symptoms appear in the form of mosaic-like green, yellowish or brown necrosis. So far, direct control has not been possible. The meticulous use of virus-free seedlings, the constant elimination of aphids and spraying with liverwort extract have a preventive effect.

tips and tricks

Regular weeding is an indispensable part of care. Shortly before harvest, knowledgeable gardeners no longer rake the rhubarb. The result is a significantly lower nitrate level in the plants.
