Do you have a unique balcony planting up your sleeve? Do you prefer to eat fruit vegetables from your own cultivation? Pumpkin fulfills both wishes at the same time. You can find out exactly how this works here in no time.

Cultivation indoors ensures best growth on the balcony

It is preferably small varieties that recommend pumpkins as ideal balcony plants. A magnificent flower is followed by decorative fruits that attract everyone's attention. Not to mention the tasty autumn harvest. We recommend growing indoors.

  • the ideal starting date for sowing is mid/late April
  • Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours
  • Fill seed pots (€16.68) with peat sand or coconut flakes
  • insert the seeds 1-2 cm deep and moisten

The heatable mini greenhouse offers an exemplary germination temperature of 23-25 degrees Celsius. Alternatively, stretch a piece of cling film over each pot and place it on the partially shaded, warm window sill. Germination will start within 8 days. Now carry the vessels to a light-flooded place with cooler temperatures just under 20 degrees Celsius.

Planting time on the balcony

After germination, the seedlings thrive so quickly that they are ready to move to the balcony after 4 weeks. It is now mid-May, the ideal planting time for cold-sensitive pumpkins. A planter with a volume of 60 to 90 liters and a nutrient-rich substrate with plenty of compost should be available.

  • Layer a drainage layer made of potsherds, perlite (€37.51) or gravel above the water drain in the ground
  • Spread a permeable garden fleece over it so that the material does not become clogged with crumbs of earth
  • Fill in the substrate, insert the pumpkin plant in the middle and water it

A hardening phase in a partially shaded, sheltered location is recommended. Then the pumpkin gets its summer location with as many hours of sunshine as possible. It should be warm and airy here so that diseases and pests have no place to attack. So that the wanderings of the heavy tub don't give you sore muscles, place it on a practical plant trolley right from the start.

tips and tricks

Do not forget to leave a pouring margin of 2-3 cm. There is hardly any more tiresome work than wiping up the spilled water-soil mixture from the balcony floor after each watering.
