Asparagus is a heavy feeder that stays in the same place for many years. Optimal soil preparation helps to provide the plants with nutrients. Regular fertilizer application is necessary to improve the soil for the following years.

Soil preparation - the be-all and end-all of asparagus cultivation

Whether green or white asparagus - without good soil preparation you can only harvest a few asparagus. In order to prepare the soil for the cultivation of asparagus, a green manure in the previous year creates the best conditions. The plant material is simply chopped up and worked in in late autumn. It loosens the soil and releases nutrients.

In the year of planting the various asparagus varieties, copious amounts of compost or manure are worked into the soil next to the actual rows of plants. The fertilizing material must be mature, fresh material can “burn” the plant roots.

Chopped shrub material, leaves and other garden debris are good for keeping the soil nice and loose.

Fertilize during the growing season

After planting the asparagus you can give special fertilizer for asparagus according to the instructions on the packaging. With a well-prepared bed, this is not urgently necessary.

Once or twice, carefully rake in ripe compost or horn shavings (€32.93) between the asparagus rows. Make sure that the roots never come into direct contact with the fertilizer.

Fertilize during dormancy

After the asparagus season at the end of June and in August, fertilize with asparagus fertilizer. Diluted nettle slurry is used as a biological fertilizer. Here, however, the odor nuisance should not be underestimated.

After removing the asparagus weed in late autumn, additional fertilizers are useful. Half-ripe compost can now be carefully placed between the rows.

Mulch material spread between rows not only reduces weed germination, but also improves the soil with additional nutrients.

tips and tricks

If the cultivation of asparagus is really worthwhile, you cannot avoid regular soil analyses. It is best to have the soil checked in winter to find out which nutrients are sufficiently available. The analysis determines what optimal fertilization looks like.
