Basically Jerusalem artichoke can be propagated by seeds. The seed can only be harvested from the flower under favorable conditions. In areas with a short growing season, the seeds do not ripen on the flower.

Purchased seeds are sown in spring in the seedbed. The plants are later transplanted outdoors.

Propagate Jerusalem artichoke by tubers

The plant itself takes over the propagation via the tuber by forming plenty of new tubers every year. Each tuber in turn produces further offshoots.

You propagate Jerusalem artichokes by leaving a tuber in the ground after harvest or by planting it in a different place. It reliably drives out again the next year - if it has not become the victim of voles.

As long as the ground is not frozen, you can plant new tubers all year round. Jerusalem artichoke is hardy and tolerates temperatures down to minus 30 degrees.

Unbridled reproduction

The biggest problem with growing Jerusalem artichoke in the garden is propagation. Within a few years, the plant multiplies so much via the tubers that it overwhelms all other garden plants.

To limit spread, dig up tubers regularly. When harvesting, make sure that no more than one tuber remains in the ground. You shouldn't overlook very small specimens either, because they will also sprout again.

After four to five years, the soil at the site of the Jerusalem artichoke is exhausted. Then lay out the harvested tubers in another place with nutritious soil. This ensures that there are always enough strong plants to grow back.
