In German supermarkets, the two avocado varieties "Fuerte" and "Hass" dominate, but the selection of avocados is much more extensive. There are at least 200 different varieties in total, and some experts even assume there are over 400 species. We will introduce you to the most important ones.

Avocado - one variety more delicious than the other
Unfortunately, only a few of these hundreds of avocado types are commercially available in this country. The various species differ in shape, color and taste, but above all in weight and nutritional composition. The average avocado contains up to 25 percent oil and is therefore rich in unsaturated fatty acids. In addition, the Aztec fruit contains many important vitamins and minerals - which are largely retained, since avocados should be eaten raw.
These are the main avocado varieties:
- Fuerte (green shell, pear-shaped)
- Hass / Black Sensation (dark skin when ripe, very aromatic)
- Nabal (smooth shell, round shape, low fat content)
- Mini avocado (small and cucumber-shaped, seedless)
Which kind tastes better?
On this question, as well as on other questions of taste, even proven avocado experts disagree. In Germany, the Fuerte, weighing up to 400 grams, is one of the most popular varieties, alongside the slightly lighter Hass. The Fuerte tastes creamy and mild, and its fruits also have the advantage of being comparatively insensitive to cold. Avocados of this type can easily be stored in the refrigerator at four to six degrees. In contrast, the "Hass" variety inspires with its dark skin and yellow flesh with an intense nutty aroma. This avocado, born from a random mutation, is perfect for a delicious guacamole.
Special styles for special occasions
If you want to take care of your figure, but don't want to do without the delicious and healthy food avocado, then you should reach for the "Nadal" variety. The medium-sized avocado has the lowest fat content of all the varieties and is usually available from January to March. A very special treat, on the other hand, is the mini avocado, which has so far only been available very rarely in German supermarkets. This small, cucumber-shaped fruit has no pit (which is actually a seed) and pops out of its shell like liverwurst. The flesh is very soft, creamy and mild.
tips and tricks
Avocados are best when they are unripe, i. H. buy hard state. The fruit ripens quickly if stored at room temperature with ripe apples. But be careful: the delicate avocados spoil within just a few days.
