The beautiful pear tree suddenly gets brown leaves. This can be caused by disease and pest infestation. Sometimes it is also simple care mistakes that affect the tree. What can you do about the brown leaves?

Brown leaves on the pear tree

There are various reasons why the leaves on the pear tree turn brown. Some of the most common causes are:

  • fire blight
  • pear grating
  • voles
  • care mistakes

fire blight

If the leaves turn dark brown to black, curl up and finally fall off, it may be the dreaded fire blight.

The disease spreads like an epidemic and is difficult to combat. Fire blight is notifiable because it is dangerous to all fruit trees. Notify your gardening department of a possible infestation.

There is little you can do about fire blight. Younger plants must be uprooted and discarded immediately. With large trees, it can help to cut out all affected areas deep into the healthy wood. Most of the time, however, the trees die.

pear grating

You can recognize this widespread pear tree disease by the orange-brown spots on the leaves. It is not so dangerous for the tree. In most cases you can still harvest pears as normal.

Cut off and discard any affected leaves. See if there are junipers in the neighborhood. The rust fungus overwinters in juniper and spreads again in spring. Therefore, all juniper bushes in the vicinity should be removed.

voles

The rodents love the suction roots of pear trees. In some years they eat the whole root system. As a result, the tree can no longer absorb water and dries up. You can tell this when the leaves turn brown.

Drive voles out of your garden with suitable measures.

care mistakes

Pear trees need moist soil. If it is too dry, it can affect the leaves. They dry out, turn brown and fall off.

Provide adequate moisture, especially during the hot summer months and very cold winters when the ground is frozen.

tips and tricks

Tree clippings, leaves and fruit affected by diseases or pests should never be disposed of in the compost. Put such plant remains in the household waste bin or burn them.
