At first glance, the range of cherry trees on the market seems inexhaustible, especially when browsing the internet. Prices vary greatly depending on size and variety. A closer look is worthwhile!

Before the purchase

If you want to plant a cherry tree in your garden, you first have to decide whether it should be a sweet or a sour cherry. Basically, the selection of sweet cherry varieties is much larger. The range of sour cherries can be described as manageable.

Depending on the space you have available, you have to opt for half or standard. The trunk length of the half-stem is approx. 100-150 cm, of the high-stem approx. 180-220 cm, plus the crown in each case. Special varieties, such as columnar and dwarf cherry trees, are offered for small gardens or patio tubs.

Buy locally or online?

Do you buy your cherry tree in a tree nursery, by mail order or in the hardware store/discounter around the corner? If you have a clear idea of which variety is best suited for your own garden and also have the time to browse the Internet, buying online is a good idea. If you need help in choosing the right cherry tree, you are in better hands in a tree nursery with expert staff.

Prices

Prices depend on size and variety. The half trunks cost around EUR 20.00 as root goods, from EUR 25.00 with balls or in a container. The pillar and dwarf cherries are available for EUR 15.00-25.00. The standard trees are the most expensive (from approx. EUR 160.00), and the price increases with increasing size. In the case of particularly favorable offers, always check carefully whether the delivery size is specified and whether it corresponds to your expectations.

tips and tricks

The sweet cherries live up to their name in terms of taste and are primarily intended for eating raw because they have crunchy skin and firm, sometimes light-colored flesh. The sour cherries have dark red flesh and are very soft and juicy. Due to their more or less sour taste, they are better suited for processing into jams, jellies, compotes or as a cake topping.
