Most common type of damage: many small cracks

When summer heat and high humidity come together, the tender tomato skin cannot cope with the fluctuations. The skin bursts open in many places without reaching deep into the flesh. How to avoid the damage:

  • Never water tomato plants overhead
  • ideally water in the early morning hours
  • always cultivate under a rain cover

If there is high humidity under a rain canopy, there is a risk of late blight infestation. So leave one page open.

Correctly interpret star-shaped tears on tomatoes

Tomato plants prefer consistent water and nutrient supply throughout. Rashes in one direction or the other cause the fruit to burst, with the damage manifesting itself in a star shape in this case.

It doesn't get that far if you water tomato plants as evenly as possible. As soon as the surface of the earth dries, it is poured. Strong drying out and correspondingly intensive watering causes the unsightly cracks on the tomato skins.

A sudden increase in the amount of fertilizer has an even more dramatic effect. If the nutrient supply increases, the fruit will grow faster than the skin. An even application of compost as soon as the propagation is over is much better. Gradually increase the dosage as flowering begins. In this way, you effectively prevent star-shaped cracks on tomatoes.

Circular jumps require immediate action

If the skin on tomatoes bursts open in circles, this indicates that the sun has been too intense. This damage occurs in particular when too many leaves have been removed, for example as part of a pruning. There is therefore a lack of adequate shading. It is best to get out a large parasol right away and protect the tomato plant from further sunburn.
