Raspberries are one of the fruits that you should eat right away. Even freshly picked raspberries only keep for a few days in the fridge. The sweet aroma disappears after just one day.

How do you know that raspberries are really fresh?

  • Plump fruit
  • Strong, shiny color
  • Solid Pearls
  • Aromatic smell
  • No traces of mold formation

It is rare to find really fresh raspberries in the supermarket. They often have a long journey behind them. You can see that too. The fruits are no longer as shiny as they were right after harvest and feel slightly soft to mushy.

You can recognize freshly picked raspberries by the fact that the fruits are plump and have a strong red, yellow or black colour.

You can only store really fresh raspberries. Older fruits should be eaten immediately or processed immediately. By the next day at the latest, they are no longer edible.

Store raspberries correctly

Freshly picked raspberries from the garden that you cannot eat or process right away must be stored in a cool place. They can be stored in the fruit and vegetable drawer of the refrigerator.

Only store raspberries that are in perfect condition and have no dents or slight rotten spots. Most of them are already infested with mold. The mold spores also spread in the refrigerator and infect the other fruits.

For storage use a basket made of papier-mâché or a similar, air-permeable material. Under no circumstances should you use metal bowls. Place a plate under the basket to prevent the amniotic fluid from contaminating the fridge.

Prepare raspberries for storage

Sort the raspberries carefully. Raspberries from the garden should not be washed. The fruit loses a lot of its aroma and becomes watery due to the water.

If washing cannot be avoided, briefly rinse the fruit with a gentle shower. Never leave raspberries in water. The raspberries must be dry before you store them in the fridge.

tips and tricks

If you have harvested more raspberries than you can eat quickly, preserve the fruit. You can freeze raspberries, boil them down or process them into jam or juice.
