The raspberry ripening time depends on the raspberry variety that grows in your garden. Summer raspberries ripen earlier than autumn raspberries. Two-timer raspberries even have two crops.

When is the ripening time of the different raspberry varieties?

You can harvest summer raspberries from June to July.

The harvest of autumn raspberries begins in early August and continues for several weeks. You can keep picking raspberries until the first frost sets in.

Two-timer raspberries combine the ripening times of both varieties. The first fruits are ripe from June, the second harvest takes place from August.

New varieties with a longer harvest time

If you love eating raspberries, you should plant raspberry varieties that flower for many weeks and produce new fruit all the time.

"Polana" is one of the best-known raspberry varieties with a long ripening period. The fruits are only medium-sized, but you can harvest fresh raspberries continuously for many weeks.

At these signs, raspberries are ripe

  • Fruits are solid red, black, or yellow
  • The size of the raspberries doesn't matter
  • The raspberry aroma is clearly perceptible
  • Ripe raspberries can be easily removed from the bush

Test ripeness before picking

Even if the fruits on the bush are already showing a strong color, that does not automatically mean that they are ripe.

You can only be sure if you test whether the raspberries can be easily removed from the bush. Ripe fruits fall into your hands almost by themselves.

Avoid squeezing the fruit. This damages the delicate skin of the raspberries and the juice runs out. Decay sets in quickly at the bruises.

Harvest raspberry bushes two to three times a week

Raspberries ripen over several weeks. Not all fruits ripen at the same time, even if they are on the same bush.

During harvest time, you should pick ripe raspberries two to three times a week.

If you leave the fruit on the bush for too long, it will become soft and mushy.

tips and tricks

Only ever harvest as many raspberries as you can use. The delicious fruits cannot be stored for long. They taste best anyway when eaten freshly picked from the bush.
