Most raspberry varieties require climbing aids. Without scaffolding, the slender rods would quickly sink to the ground or be broken by the wind. If you tie your raspberries, you also prevent fungal attack.

Climbing aids for summer raspberries

The best climbing aid for summer raspberries is a so-called V-frame.

To do this, set up a post at the end of each row of raspberries, which you provide with several cross braces. These are narrower at the bottom and get wider towards the top, forming a V.

Weatherproof cords made of wire or plastic are pulled between the cross braces, to which the rods are attached. Experienced gardeners fasten the annual canes on one side and the biennial canes on the other side. This makes it easier to cut back.

Knot grids are sufficient for autumn raspberries. A mesh of wire is stretched over the bushes.

Provide light and sun

When tying up, make sure that the individual rods are sufficiently far apart from each other. As a result, the air circulates well and the shrubs dry better in damp conditions.

Rods with fruit should be exposed to the sun as much as possible. This will make the raspberries bigger and sweeter.

In the garden trade you can get special clamps for attaching the raspberries at a reasonable price. This saves you fiddling with wire and scissors. The brackets are easy to set. After pruning, you can take them off to reuse them.
