Most peach varieties bloom as early as mid to late March, which can lead to crop losses in the event of sudden cold snaps. The "Flamingo" peach variety was therefore specially bred to be frost hardy, so that its blossoms can withstand temperatures of up to minus eight degrees Celsius.

Peach flamingo with frost hardy flowers

Contrary to popular belief, peaches are very easy to grow in your own garden. Although peach trees are very warm and sun-loving, they also need a cold rest period in winter. The tree only produces flowers if this rest period is observed. The peach blossom is one of the first fruit blossoms of the year, but frostbite is not uncommon. In order to eliminate this problem, the “Flamingo” peach variety with frost-hardy blossoms was bred in the Czech Republic at the beginning of the 1990s. In Germany, however, the market launch did not take place until 2010.

Harvest from mid to late August

Peaches of the Flamingo variety are characterized by

  • a handy medium size
  • orange-red color with few hairs
  • yellow, very juicy flesh
  • as well as a good, typical peach taste.

Flamingo needs a full sun to at least partially shaded location that also offers adequate protection from wind, drafts and cold. In addition, the peach prefers loose soil that is rich in nutrient-rich humus. If the peach tree feels comfortable in its location, it can grow between three and four meters high and regularly delivers high yields. Compared to other peach varieties, the peach flamingo is not only amazingly resistant to frost, but can also be cultivated in almost any location.

Prune peaches regularly

Furthermore, the "Flamingo" peach is self-pollinating, whereby another tree of this variety naturally ensures better and higher yields. To ensure that this does not happen, you should prune the tree after harvesting. Peaches bear on last year's wood, so that older twigs and shoots always have to be cut off. Otherwise the tree puts too much energy into non-bearing wood and neglects fruiting.

Fertilize in spring

Regular fertilization is also important for a rich harvest. You should fertilize generously with nitrogen and potassium, especially in the spring, for example in the form of compost. Stable manure, horn shavings (€32.93) or commercial fruit fertilizer are also suitable. Discolored leaves usually indicate a nutrient deficiency. However, the curling disease, which is common in peaches, can also be the cause.

tips and tricks

When choosing the location, make sure that another stone fruit should never follow a previous stone fruit. This can cause serious damage to the young tree.
