The peach tree, originally from China, has been cultivated in Germany for a very long time. Old cultivars such as the Red Eichstädter (also known as "Kernechter vom Vorgebirge") testify to this. However, the heat-loving peaches are quite demanding in terms of their location.

Peaches love the sun

A spot that is as sunny and sheltered from the wind as possible with a loose and nutrient-rich substrate is ideal. A southerly orientation without shade, but with a boundary (e.g. house wall) to protect against wind and draughts, should be the right choice. Peaches thrive best where wine also grows. Depending on the variety, cultivation is also possible in rougher regions.

White-fleshed varieties are less sensitive

Unless you live in a wine-growing region, growing more robust varieties is recommended. Most white-fleshed peaches are less sensitive to less than ideal locations and also feel at home in northern regions. You should also choose a frost-resistant peach whose blossoms do not freeze to death when night frosts set in. In such a case, the "Flamingo" variety is a good choice.

tips and tricks

Look out for new breeds that have been bred specifically for higher frost tolerance and resistance to leaf curl.
