Spirits disagree on the best time to plant a peach tree. Many experts advise planting in the spring, as the peach takes a long time to grow. However, autumn planting has the advantage that the tree then gets its winter break, which is necessary for fruiting. But no matter when you want to plant your peach, it doesn't need to be fertilized in the first year.

Location with nutrient-rich substrate

Peaches require plenty of nutrients, especially nitrogen and potassium, which are essential for healthy tree and fruit growth. Plant your peach tree in a humus-rich garden soil, which should be enriched with humus if necessary. Since young trees are very sensitive, fertilizer should not be applied in the first year. For this, however, the young peach needs plenty of water and should be watered regularly, especially in summer. However, waterlogging should be avoided.

Maintenance measures from the second year

Finally, in the second year you can fertilize with mature compost or stable manure from February / March. From May, the fertilizer should be applied regularly once a month and continued until September. After all, no fertilizer is used in winter. Combine fertilization with copious watering. This is especially important if you are using chemical fertilizers, otherwise root burns may occur due to a chemical reaction.

Suitable fertilizers for peaches

When fertilizing peaches (as well as other types of fruit), it is preferable to choose organic fertilizers, because all additives are concentrated in the fruit. Peaches need nitrogen and potassium above all for healthy growth and rich fruiting. Suitable fertilizers are

  • Farmyard manure (poultry manure is particularly rich in nitrogen!)
  • horn shavings
  • mature compost
  • alternative fruit fertilizer
  • or a potassium-containing nitrogen fertilizer.

Water the peaches properly

Young peach trees should be watered regularly, especially in the first year. However, since the plants are very sensitive to lime, you should preferably use rainwater. If you lack the means to collect the same, just leave tap water for about a week. Then, however, do not pour off the calcareous sediment. Older peaches can usually provide themselves with water, only plants kept in tubs should continue to be watered.

Furthermore, you do not have to prune your young peach tree in the first year. The first cut is made in the autumn of the second year. Peaches can be pruned in autumn after harvest, but also in spring.
