Growing your own tree is a lot of fun - especially when it bears fruit for the first time after about three to four years. Peaches - with the exception of the seedless varieties - are best propagated by cuttings.

This is how the propagation via cuttings succeeds

This type of propagation occurs in early spring. Select suitable, non-lignified young shoots from the previous year and cut them off 10 to 15 centimeters long. The interface should be at an angle to make it easier for the cuttings to absorb water and thus rooting. Also remove flower buds, as these deprive the cutting of the strength it needs for root development. Now put the shoot with the cutting point down in a small pot with potting soil.

Care of the cutting

  • Place the pot in a warm and bright place - between 20 and 25 °C is ideal
  • keep the soil evenly moist but not wet
  • be patient - peaches take quite a long time to root
  • cultivate the cuttings in the pot until next spring
  • then it should be strong enough to plant it outdoors in a sheltered spot
  • do not fertilize the cutting until it has developed roots

Refine peaches if possible

Most peach varieties in Germany are grafted, i. H. grafted onto alien stems and roots. This measure is intended to ensure that the roots of the heat-loving peaches do not freeze to death in winter frost. However, there are also comparatively hardy varieties that can either be used as a grafting base for higher quality peaches or can be grown as a peach tree themselves. The Revita peach, which is characterized by its high resistance to diseases and bad weather conditions, is well suited.

Remove the pit from the peach

Of course, you can also grow your peach tree from a seed. The most suitable varieties for this, however, are the varieties with their seeds, such as the foothill peach. Although you will most likely be able to grow a sapling from a supermarket peach, you will not then know what variety it is and what conditions it needs. Also, you never know what to expect from a pome peach - unlike a seedling, which is genetically identical to the mother plant.

tips and tricks

If you want to grow your peach sapling from a pit, you must stratify it before germination; H. store in a box with damp sand in a dark and cool place over the winter. However, please do not put the seeds in the freezer because they are no longer germinable if they are frozen.
