The optimal location sets the course for successful cultivation of strawberries in the hobby garden. Pay attention to the following tips to ensure your strawberry plants thrive.

The best site conditions

In order for strawberry plants to produce the desired juicy, refreshing fruits, the location should be chosen carefully. It depends on these light and soil conditions:

  • sunny and warm, likes to be bathed in air
  • semi-shady location reduces the crop yield
  • ideally protected from the pelting rain
  • humus-rich, nutrient-rich and loose soil
  • preferably fresh, but without waterlogging
  • a slightly acidic pH of 5.5 to 6.5

In addition to the light and soil conditions, the crop rotation plays a central role in the choice of location. No strawberry plants may have been cultivated here in the past four years. Lettuce, mustard, parsley and deep-rooted legumes are welcome as pre-crops. In mixed cultivation, strawberries get along very well with low-growing plants such as onions, marigolds or marigolds that do not cast any shade.
