The hazelnut - a popular nut bush that many gardeners would not want to do without. The fruits are in demand, both in humans and in animals such as squirrels. But what needs to be considered when planting?

When is the best time?

The best time to plant hazelnuts - regardless of whether they are cut into a shrub or tree - is autumn. It is also possible to plant this plant in spring or summer.

However, the procedure in spring could damage their flowers and in summer the soil could dry out too quickly and watering has to be done every two days when there is no rain. Therefore, preference should be given to autumn.

Where is the best location ?

Before planting in the ground, the location should be chosen appropriately. The hazelnut should not be planted directly next to less competitive plants. It is extremely large and also takes up a lot of space due to its root runners. So plan enough space!

The best location is in a partially shaded to sunny position. In addition, the plant is well protected from wind and frost (to protect its flowers from freezing in February).

How is the hazelnut planted?

Planting the hazelnut should be well thought out. Once planted, it is difficult to remove. If you have decided to do this, pay attention to the following points:

  • Loosen the soil beforehand
  • Substrate: rich in nutrients, well drained, slightly acidic to alkaline, moist
  • for faster growth: dip the roots in liquid fertilizer beforehand

If you have placed the plant in a generously dug planting hole and covered it with plenty of soil, you can provide it with a layer of mulch. This will prevent the soil from drying out too quickly. A vigorous watering and a water supply in the first few weeks should definitely be given.

tips and tricks

If you want to harvest hazelnuts in late summer, you should plant at least two bushes. The reason: the hazelnut is not self-fertile.
