Growing hazelnuts from seed and with your own hands - is that within the realm of possibility? While it's not a common method to germinate and grow hazelnuts, it's worth trying for adventurous gardeners.

Only raw hazelnuts will germinate

Anyone who thinks they can simply get hazelnuts from the shops and germinate them at home is wrong. Many hazelnuts from the trade were dried too hot, roasted or have been stored too long and are therefore no longer germinable.

Which hazelnuts can be used?

You should use fresh hazelnuts for sprouting. Ideally, those that you have harvested or collected yourself. Then you can be sure that they are germinable.

However, make sure to only use ripe hazelnuts. You can recognize them by their brown shell and the fact that their shell can be easily detached. In addition, ripe hazelnuts fall to the ground. Also, the nuts you use for sprouting should be unpeeled.

How are the hazelnuts stimulated to germinate?

  • Use large nuts.
  • Do not crack the nuts, use them with their shells on.
  • Hazelnuts are cold germs: germination usually does not work indoors.
  • Choose a sheltered spot in the garden or in a pot on the balcony.
  • Put the nuts in the ground close to the surface.
  • It is best to cover the spot with a net so that birds do not attack the nuts.
  • Be sure to keep the area moist.
  • With luck, the nuts will germinate and the first shoots will appear in spring.

tips and tricks

It is doubtful whether home-grown hazelnuts from seeds will later produce many large and tasty nuts. They are not identical to the parent plants. Therefore, refinements are recommended.
