Currants need regular pruning. The older the shoots get, the fewer fruits will develop on them. The best time to prune is right after harvest. Which shoots are removed depends on the variety.

Prune currants twice a year

  • Cut back after harvest
  • Care cut in autumn

Cut red and white currants

The shrubs mainly bear berries on the two- and three-year-old shoots. After harvesting, all branches older than three years are cut.

Cut black currants

Most black currants grow on the one-year shoot branches. By shortening the main shoots, new branches are formed.

Care cut in autumn

Remove all diseased and dry shoots and thin out the currants if necessary.
