To qualify as a climber or ground cover, vigorous tendrils on strawberry plants are a prerequisite. The following varieties score with exactly this attribute and offer wonderful flowers and a rich fruit load on top of that:
- Hummi Gento: several times bearing on stable tendrils, quickly forms a dense strawberry meadow
- Florika: acts as a ground cover under trees and shrubs, annual growth of up to 50 centimeters
- Spadeka: climbs or creeps tirelessly, early harvest from June
- Mountain star: climbs tirelessly in beds and on climbing frames
- Red Panda: a classic among the climbing strawberries with pink flowers
When cultivating hanging strawberries in planters, magnificent tendril formation also proves to be an advantage. Popular varieties here are Merosa, Mignonette and Diamant. They combine their ability to grow vertically with the highest ornamental value and delicious strawberries.
Non-climbing strawberry varieties
At first glance, you cannot tell from the young plants whether they are forming tendrils or not. So that you can make a well-founded choice of variety, we present popular varieties without offshoots below:
- Rügen: an old variety with a bushy habit and medium-sized, tasty fruits
- Alexandria: a strawberry of the month without a notable urge to spread
- Weisse Baron Solemacher: thrives upright and bears white fruits
- Golden Alexandria: gold-colored foliage, not trailing
- Déesse des Vallées: everbearing monthly strawberry without runners
When buying young plants or seeds, increased attention is therefore required if you have climbing strawberries in your sights.
