Propagating the tropical baobab tree is easy. It is also possible for hobby gardeners without previous knowledge. A few tricks support the success helpful.

Cultivation with cuttings from specialist shops

The specialist trade grows small seedlings all year round. To ensure that they do not lose moisture during transport, experts seal the trunk with wax.

In this way, the baobab tree survives several months without water.

Method:

  • Remove the wax seal from the seedlings using a sharp knife
  • Place offshoots in lukewarm water (maximum 2 weeks) so that leaves sprout faster
  • As soon as the first leaves appear, plant the plant in a special substrate.

Cultivation with own offshoots

Alternatively, hobby gardeners can grow their own offshoots with their own baobab tree. These are carefully removed when repotting.

  • Time: spring
  • At least three leaves are required per cutting
  • Potting soil: mixture of sand and peat

Method:

  • Cut off the cuttings and let them dry out for a few days

In ideal conditions, the seeds will germinate in a few weeks. In exceptional cases, the germs take several months to appear.

  • always cover well, air daily
  • Ambient temperature: at least 23 degrees Celsius
  • Keep growing soil evenly moist
  • But: not wet!
  • separate immediately when roots form
  • Diameter of the plant pots: at least 7 centimeters

Fertilize young plants properly

Fertilize small plants of this type only every 4 to 6 weeks. As soon as the leaves fall off during the dry season, fertilization is stopped.
