Grow the hazelnut on your own in the green at home? Whether as a protective hedge, as a solitary ornament (blood hazel, golden hazel, corkscrew hazel,…) or with the intention of harvesting the nuts - the hazelnut is uncomplicated to cultivate. However, there are certain aspects to keep in mind…

Factors that are decisive in cultivation
One of the main factors that play a role in the cultivation of hazelnuts is the location. This includes the location and the soil. On the other hand, the care of this plant, which includes fertilizing, cutting and plant protection, is important.
The answer to the location question
Ideally, you should choose a light, sunny and sheltered place for the hazelnut to grow. If possible, it should be protected from summer heat and dry periods. With regard to the floor, she is undemanding. A deep subsoil with a high humus content is sufficient for this plant. Only heavy and wet soil causes her problems.
What care does the hazelnut need?
If the location meets the needs of the hazelnut, it needs little care. She can get by on her own most of the year. But be careful if you are too modest when caring for them: it is not uncommon for hazelnuts to be attacked by the hazel borer, gall mites or the Monila fungus.
The following points are recommended when handling hazelnuts:
- Protect young hazelnut trees or hazelnut bushes from frost, e.g. B. with mats, jute fabric or fleece
- attach young hazelnut trees to posts
- Remove root shoots e.g. B. chop off
- cut out old shoots
- water in dry seasons
Is it worth growing?
Whether a hazelnut bush or an entire hectare of land planted with this plant, it is worth growing if you like hazelnuts. The first low yields can be expected from the 2nd or 3rd year. From the 10th year, the hazelnut usually delivers full yields. Depending on the variety, you can harvest nuts from the plant for around 40 years.
tips and tricks
If you decide to grow them, remember to clean the nuts after harvest and dry them extensively with the shell. Then the nuts can be stored well and for a long time.
