Melons of different varieties are a delicious thirst quencher in midsummer with a low calorific value and high water content. While imported specimens are available from early summer, homegrown melons can only be harvested later.

The year-round available imported melons

In the supermarkets, melons of various types are now available almost all year round at reasonable prices. Watermelons come mainly from the following countries in the spring and summer peak season:

  • Spain
  • Hungary
  • Turkey
  • Israel

Ripe honeydew melons, refreshing sugar melons and the delicious Charentais melon also offer a variety of tastes.

Harvest melons from your own garden

Since melons originally come from somewhat warmer regions, cultivation in this country requires the young plants to be brought forward early. This is the only way to harvest ripe watermelons or honeydew melons in the greenhouse or outdoors by autumn.

tips and tricks

The roots of young melon plants are relatively delicate, which makes transplanting difficult. It is therefore advisable to sow melons in individual peat pots even if they are pre-cultured on the windowsill.
