The passion fruit is not only an important ingredient for many fruit juices, but also a delicious fruit for fresh consumption. With a little patience, it can also be grown from seeds in a pot on the balcony.

The difference between passion fruit and maracuja

The two names passion fruit and maracuja are often used interchangeably in this country. Another factor that contributes to the confusion between maracuja and passion fruit is that the sliced passion fruit is usually depicted on bottles with maracuja juice. The passion fruit is also the fruit of a passion flower, but the fruits look different on the outside despite having a similar pulp. Maracujas are passion fruits with a yellow colored skin, in contrast to the mostly purple to dark brown passion fruits.

Get seeds for growing passion fruit

Since most passion flowers form very characteristic and magnificent flowers, seeds for growing the plants are also available in well-stocked garden shops. Since it is a tropical plant species that can only be cultivated as a houseplant and container plant in this country anyway, the seeds can be cultivated all year round. You can also use seeds from commercially available passion fruit, but you must first remove any adhering pulp from them with a piece of kitchen paper. In addition, you should not keep the seeds for too long before sowing, as passion fruit seeds only have a limited germination capacity.

The right care for growing passion fruit seeds

Due to their tropical origin, the passion fruit seeds ideally need a germination temperature of between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius. Therefore, various locations are available for cultivation:

  • in pots covered with cling film on the windowsill
  • in an indoor greenhouse with a heating mat
  • in the greenhouse with constant temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius

If possible, use a cultivation substrate that is free of weed seeds and fungal spores. Since the seeds of the passion fruit sometimes need up to two months to germinate, they are otherwise overgrown by foreign plants. After germination, the seedlings can be placed in the pot on a sunny house wall during the summer months.

Since the passion fruit is a climbing plant, you should give it a trellis or scaffolding to climb up. But pay attention to its size so that you can still overwinter the passion fruit in a place with about 10 degrees Celsius.
