The dragon fruit or pitahaya with the pleasantly fresh taste is imported to Germany from Central America or Asia all year round. It is available in well-stocked grocery stores, delicatessen, Asian and fruit shops as well as in online shops for tropical foods.

The ripe dragon fruit attracts attention on the fruit shelf because of its bizarre appearance, especially because of the bright pink, scale-like skin. The fruit is oval, 8-15 cm long and weighs up to 500 g. The flesh is white or pink in color and interspersed with small black seeds.

The pink exotics originated in Central America and are now grown in many tropical climates. The fruits for the German market come from

  • Vietnam,
  • China,
  • Thailand,
  • Israel and
  • Nicaragua.

tips and tricks

Like many exotic species, the pitahaya is harvested when it is unripe and continues to ripen during transport. The ripe dragon fruit can be recognized by the intense pink color of the skin, which gives way slightly when you press it lightly with your finger.
