Fresh pineapples only keep for a few days. If you want to store your self-cultivated or cheaply purchased pineapples for a longer period of time, the focus is on the freezer. This is how you freeze the tropical fruits perfectly.

Careful preparation

Careful preparatory work forms the basis for optimum preservation in the freezer. The pineapple should be ripe but not overripe. Since the fruit has a very soft consistency after thawing, it should not be spongy before freezing. First, peel the pineapple as thinly as possible, as the tastiest flesh is hidden under the brown skin.

Only in the second pass are the brown seeds removed. Finally, cut the pineapple into slices and bite-sized pieces. Depending on your taste, cut out the central axis with a cutter. Although this middle part is edible and just as healthy, it tastes bitter and is comparatively hard.

Step-by-step instructions on how to freeze

Following the preparatory work, tackle the freezing without delay. For this you need a baking tray, baking paper and, later on, freezer bags or airtight containers. How to proceed:

  • Cover the baking sheet with baking paper
  • Distribute the pineapple pieces on top so that they do not touch
  • put the whole thing in the freezer overnight
  • the next day, fill the frozen fruit pieces into freezer bags and seal tightly
  • ideally vacuum the bags
  • alternatively place in cans that are sealed airtight
  • proceed quickly so that the fruit does not thaw

Before you put the bags or containers back in the freezer, they are dated. Frozen pineapples can be kept for a maximum of 6 months. If you freeze according to these instructions, the pieces of fruit will not stick together. This way they can be taken out and eaten individually.

Freeze cleverly in the ice cube tray

Not every deep freezer has the space capacity to store a baking tray in it overnight. Without having to go through the pre-freezing process, you can easily freeze pineapples with the help of an ice cube tray. Simply distribute the bite-sized pieces of fruit over the small compartments and add water. If the pineapples are deep-frozen overnight, several ice cube trays can be stacked to save space.

Thaw and enjoy

Most fruits are soft to mushy after thawing. Unfortunately, pineapple is no exception in this respect. However, the fruit is excellent for an invigorating smoothie. Clever connoisseurs eat the fruit pieces half-frozen, because then they taste crisp and refreshing at the same time.

tips and tricks

The time-consuming and somewhat tricky peeling and cutting of pineapples prompted clever inventors who were looking for an uncomplicated solution. The ingenious pineapple cutter was the result. After the stalk has been removed with a knife, the device is put on and twisted into the fruit. The result is ready-cut pineapple slices without the skin, seeds and the hard, bitter central axis.
