Loganberries are a random product. It was created from a cross between blackberries and raspberries. Unlike these two fruit bushes, the loganberry hardly forms any stolons. How to properly care for the shrub to harvest the somewhat tart berries.

How often do loganberries need to be watered?

The shrubs do not need much water. It is enough to water them from time to time when it is very dry. On the other hand, a slightly damp soil does not harm as long as there is no waterlogging.

Do loganberries need regular fertilizer applications?

If the soil is very poor, you can occasionally spread some mature compost around the shrubs. Commercially available berry fertilizers (€3.94) are not necessary.

In the fall, it's a good idea to rake some compost or horn shavings (€32.93) very lightly into the soil.

How do you cut the berries correctly?

Old tendrils are cut off above the ground after harvest.

In autumn, cut out dried or diseased tendrils and thin young shoots that are too close together.

Do loganberries need a climbing aid?

The tendrils of the loganberry grow very quickly and can reach up to five meters in length. Therefore, tie the shoots to a trellis so that the fruits do not lie on the ground later.

You can also take care of the bushes on the trellis. The distance between the plants should then be at least two meters.

Can loganberries be transplanted?

Transplanting is easier than with raspberries or blackberries. Loganberries produce almost no runners, making it easier to dig the whole plant out of the ground.

What diseases attack the shrubs?

Loganberries are hardy. In poor site conditions, however, the shrubs can suffer from some diseases. Essentially, they are the same as with raspberries:

  • rod rot
  • root rot
  • focal spot disease

Cut off the infested rods completely and dispose of them with the household waste. To prevent fungal infestation, thin out the bushes so that the air can circulate well.

Unlike raspberries and blackberries, loganberry fruits rarely go moldy.

Are loganberries hardy?

Loganberries tolerate temperatures down to minus 18 degrees. Light winter protection is recommended in exposed locations.
