The custom of braiding freshly picked lavender stalks into a stick dates back to Victorian England. Back then, flowers were often used for handicrafts of this kind, partly because people could "communicate" with flowers. Each flower had a specific meaning ascribed to it. For example, it is said of the French Sun King Louis XIV that he gave selected ladies a bouquet of lavender as a sign of his affection.

Instructions for a lavender stick
Nowadays, such a pretty lavender stick can of course also be used in other ways, for example as a decoration for presents, as a substitute for a scented sachet in the wardrobe or for a nice room fragrance in a vase. For braiding you will need:
- an even number of freshly picked lavender stalks and flowers
- a nice piece of fabric, e.g. B. made of satin
- a string
- a scissors
If possible, use fresh lavender, as the drier the plant, the more brittle the stems and flowers become. When braiding, do the following:
- Tie a bouquet of lavender that is as even as possible.
- Knot the twine just below the flower spikes.
- Now wrap the ribbon over the twine, leaving a short and a long end.
- The short end is only used again for knotting.
- Now fold the stems evenly over the flower spikes.
- The stems should not snap off.
- Now “weave” in the satin ribbon and always gather two stems together.
- Braid as tightly as possible.
- Braid the lavender until you reach the end of the flower spikes.
- Now tie a tight knot that will probably need to be tightened again in a few days.
- Tie a pretty bow.
Tie a summery lavender wreath
A lavender wreath, which you can hang in a window or on the front door, is also a pretty, summery decoration. For this you need:
- a ring of straw, sticks, wire or wood
- thin floral wire
- a few bunches of lavender with stems and flowers
Here, too, you should only use freshly picked lavender if possible. Now take a small bundle of lavender and lay it flat on the ring. Wrap the wire around the stems about two or three times. Now place the flower spikes of another bundle on the wrapped stems and fasten this bundle again as described. Proceed in this way until you have wrapped the entire ring with lavender.
tips and tricks
Feel free to combine the lavender wreath with other flowers, such as bright yellow holy herb or red roses.
